In November 2005, Paul Grimwood and Shan Raffel were invited to present 3D
Firefighting techniques and tactics to South African firefighters in
Johannesburg. The summit focussed on the practical aspects of firefighting
command, accountability, strategy, tactics and techniques. Other international
speakers included Chief David Daniels (Fulton Atlanta).
Local speakers, Willie Barker, Cassie Seyffert and Frans
Glanville gave an incredible insight into firefighting
operations that few firefighters in the world have had to
face. South Africa's firefighters have been on the frontline
of the humanitarian issues facing this nation. I was deeply
touched by their ability to focus on the traditional values of
firefighters across the world. The value of life, regardless
of socio-economic status, politics, race or religion. I have
had the privilege to train firefighters in several countries.
One thing that always impresses me is that they view ALL other
firefighters as brothers and sisters.
This 5 day summit addressed the fundamental fire and rescue
issues facing frontline firefighters. Grass roots topics
included firefighting strategy and tactics, ICS,
accountability, Tactical Ventilation and 3D Firefighting
training, techniques and tactics. Over 70 of South Africa's
finest attended the summit and expereinced the 3D approach at close quarters at
the Brixton training centre.
The South African Fire Service, along with the nation
itself, has faced some amazing transitional issues. If the
courage, dedication and passion that I witnessed are typical
of the majority of firefighters in South Africa, then I have
no doubt that the Fire Service (and the Nation) has a very
bright future.
